Questions and answers

Straight answers to what people ask before they book a free intro visit.

How much do music lessons cost at B# Music?

$35 for a private 30-minute lesson, once a week, whatever the instrument and however old the student is.

Is there a trial lesson?

No. Instead there is a free intro visit: you come to the studio, talk about what you want to play, get advice on an instrument, and meet Bill before deciding anything.

How young can a child start?

From four. The lesson is the same half hour as for adults, and piano or ukulele is the usual first instrument at that age.

Am I too old to start?

No. Students at B# Music have included adults up to the age of 70.

What instruments can I learn?

Acoustic, electric, classical and bass guitar; piano, keyboards and synthesizer; mandolin, banjo and ukulele. Songwriting is taught too.

What styles are taught?

Classical, jazz, blues, folk, every kind of rock, metal and '90s alternative.

Do I need to read music before I start?

No. Reading, standard notation for every instrument and tab for the fretted ones, is something lessons teach, not something you need first.

How many lessons does it take to learn guitar?

There is no honest single number, because the lessons are only half an hour a week and the progress happens in the practice between them. Most beginners who play a little every day can strum through simple songs within a few months. Playing comfortably in a band or at an open mic takes longer.

Is 30 minutes a week enough?

For most beginners and for children, yes: half an hour is about as much new material as sticks in one sitting, and the rest of the week is for practice. What makes the difference is playing a little most days.

Can I learn a particular song?

Yes, and it is the usual way in. Bring the song and Bill writes it out for you, starting with a simple version and filling it in as you go.

Do I bring my own instrument?

Yes, to every lesson. If you don't have one yet, ask about it at the free intro visit before buying.

Can Bill help me choose an instrument and gear?

Yes: guitars and basses, strings, amps and pedals, and whether an instrument you already own needs a setup. He also suggests where to buy, in town or online.

Can lessons prepare me for an open mic, a band or a recording?

Yes. Bill plays in a working band himself and prepares students for open mics and band playing. Students can also record at the studio.

Are lessons in person?

Yes, at the studio in Charlottesville.

Where is the studio, and is there parking?

On Woodbrook Drive in north Charlottesville, with a private parking lot. The full address and directions are on the contact page.

When is the studio open?

Tuesday to Sunday: weekday afternoons into the evening, and daytime on weekends. Closed on Mondays. Exact hours are on the contact page.
